| "I don't understand" is going to be a very useful phrase, because most of the time, maybe even almost 100% of the time, you won't understand. Despite some similarities, Bulgarian sounds very different from English. In the beginning there will likely be an adjustment period during which your ears will get used to the sounds and intonations of the language. |
| In Bulgarian, "I don't understand" is не разбирам (ne razbiram). |

| Let’s break it down by syllable: не разбирам (ne razbiram). |
| Now let's hear it once again: не разбирам (ne razbiram). |
| The first word не (ne) means "no." |
| One more time: не (ne) |
| This is followed by разбирам (razbiram), which in Bulgarian is "understand." |

| Literally this means "no understand" and is the Bulgarian counterpart of "I don't understand." |
| Cultural Insights |
| More and more Bulgarians, especially in big cities, are becoming proficient in English. Still, I wouldn't expect most elderly citizens as well as people in the countryside to know any of the international lingua franca. |

Sometimes telling people you don’t speak their language is necessary. But this is allowed only in the very first phase of learning Bulgarian. 😄 Just keep on studying and you won't need this phrase.
