Welcome to BulgarianPod101.com’s Български в три минути. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Bulgarian.
In the last lesson, we learned how to use Bulgarian adjectives easily.
In this lesson we will start a series dedicated to the most common Bulgarian verbs, the ones you will definitely hear all the time!
The first verb in our series will be отивам, which means "to go". We will use this word along with many different destinations.
You will see that in Bulgarian, you have to use an appropriate linking word to connect отивам to your destination.
So imagine someone asks you Къде ще отидеш на почивка? That means "Where are you going for the holidays?" in the informal form.
So if you are going to a ski resort for example, you will say Ще отида на планина. [slowly] Ще отида на планина.
This means “I am going to the mountains”.
Let’s break down this answer.
First we had -
Ще отида which is "I am going to..."
It is the 1st person form of the verb отивам, "to go" in future tense.
After it comes на, which is the connection between the verb and your destination, so it’s like "to" in English.
Finally, we had планина which is a noun that means “mountain”.
So now, let’s see how you would reply to the same question if your destination was the beach.
In this case you would say Ще отида на море. Here, the first three words remain the same and we add the noun море which means “sea” and in this case “seaside”.
Altogether, it is Ще отида на море, meaning "I’m going to the seaside."
If you are asking this question about destinations other than vacation places, it’s quite common to use the same preposition, на, which in this case means “to” as in “go to”.
For example, you can say “I go to school” or “I go to work” with the same verb and preposition. So the first sentence “I go to school” will be Отивам на училище. [slowly] Отивам на училище.
And the second one “I go to work” is Отивам на работа. [slowly] Отивам на работа.
Now it’s time for Iva’s Insights.
In Bulgaria you can often hear people say ходя instead of отивам, which is typical for spoken Bulgarian.
For example, if you ask someone the same question "Where are you going for the holidays?" You can hear the reply Ще ходя на планина which again means "I am going to the mountains". In this case ходя has the same meaning as отивам.
Just note that these two verbs are translated as “to go” in English, and both are commonly used in everyday conversation.
So, in this lesson, we learned how to use the verb отивам and the correct preposition to talk about your destination. But what if you are not going anywhere? How will you describe what you are doing at a particular moment? For this we’ll learn another very useful verb, правя.
