Здрасти, аз съм Ива. Hi everybody! I’m Iva. |
Welcome to BulgarianPod101.com’s “Български в три минути”. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Bulgarian. |
In the last lesson, we learned how to talk about age using the verb съм, “to be.” |
In this lesson, we are going to introduce a new verb that is used to talk about things you own. So the topic of this lesson is the verb имам, “to have”. |
A question you may hear is Имаш ли кола? meaning “Do you have a car?” |
[slowly] Имаш ли кола? |
Let’s take a closer look at this question. |
Имаш, means “you have”. You can see that имам has been conjugated to имаш. Ли is the particle we use to form questions in Bulgarian. Аdding it changes the meaning of “you have” to “do you have”. Имаш and имаш ли. |
Кола, means “a car”. |
So if you *do* have a car, how can you answer this question? |
Just turn the verb имам into the 1st person—it’s really simple! The first person form is the same as the dictionary form - имам. |
So in this case, we go from Имаш ли кола? to |
Имам кола. “I have a car.” |
[slowly] Имам кола. |
So say for example, that a classmate wants to borrow a pen from you. He might ask, Имаш ли химикалка? Which is “Do you have a pen?” |
If you only have a red pen, you can answer Имам червена химикалка. “I have a red pen.” |
Okay, so now let’s look at the FORMAL way to ask someone if he or she has something. |
Instead of Имаш, you’ll start with Имате, which means “you have” in the plural form. For example... |
Имате ли кола? “Do you have a car?” |
[slowly] Имате ли кола? |
Now it’s time for Iva’s Insights. |
If you’re sure that someone has something, you can use the word нали when asking the question. It will sound like confirmation. Here’s an example. |
Имаш куче, нали? This literally means “You have a dog, right?” |
You just add the little word нали after the sentence. It makes the whole sentence sound like a question. |
In recent lessons, we have learned about the verbs съм, “to be”, and имам, “to have”. |
Next time we’ll learn how to use these two verbs in their negative forms in order to say “I’m not” and “I don’t have”. |
Did you know that to turn a verb into the negative form in Bulgarian, you just have to add one word? |
I'll be waiting to explain how in the next Български в три минути. |
До скоро! |
