Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in Bulgaria Series at BulgarianPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Bulgarian holidays and observances. I’m Eric, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 18 - April Fool’s Day.
On April 1 in different countries around the world, including Bulgaria, people celebrate April Fools’ Day or April Jokes’ Day, or in Bulgarian Denyat na lazhata.
In this lesson we’ll tell you how this holiday is celebrated in Bulgaria.
Now, before we get into more detail, I've got a question for you-
Do you know what the full name of April Fools’ Day is?
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later, so keep listening!
April Fools’ Day is celebrated with the so-called First of April “jokes,” or shegi—tricks which can be “innocent,” or in Bulgarian nevinni, or very serious. Some people “lie,” or lazhat, to their friends, others pull practical jokes, and still others think of games to “entertain,” or zabavlyavat, their colleagues, friends, or families.
In Bulgaria, April Fools’ Day is especially honored in the Bulgarian capital of humor—the town of Gabrovo. On April 1, 1972 in Gabrovo, the “House of Humor and Satire,” or in Bulgarian Domat na humora i satirata, was established. Naturally, it’s the town’s calling card. Although it’s called a house, it’s actually a museum and cultural center, where even today there are “exhibitions,” or izlozhbi, and festivals presenting different humorous works.
Of course, April Fools’ Day is not an official holiday. But it is a way of “escaping,” or da se izbyaga, from the seriousness of the “daily routine,” or in Bulgarian ezhednevieto, and a good day for making jokes by telling tales and cheerful anecdotes, and for holding comedic events.
People are well aware that on April 1 they can be lied to or have “tricks played” on them, or in Bulgarian da im pogodyat nomer. Therefore it takes great skill to think of new jokes every year, and the tricks are revealed with the words "Happy first of April!"
Now it's time to answer our quiz question-
Do you know what the full name of April Fools’ Day is?
April 1 is an international day of humor, satire, and fun. It is also called "Day of Jokes and Whopping Lies."
How was this lesson? Did you learn something interesting?
