Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in Bulgaria Series at BulgarianPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Bulgarian holidays and observances. I’m Eric, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 10- Father's Day.
Father’s Day is a holiday celebrated in many countries, but the dates on which it is celebrated are often different. In Bulgaria, Father’s Day “falls on December 26,” or in Bulgarian se pada na 26-ti dekimvri,.
In this lesson you’ll learn more about why Father’s Day or Denyat na bashtata in Bulgarian is celebrated on this date and what other candidates for a Father’s Day there are.
Now, before we get into more detail, I've got a question for you-
Do you know what Rooster’s Day in Bulgaria is, and how it’s related to men?
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later, so keep listening!
Father’s Day is specially chosen to honor fatherhood. In every country there is a Mother’s Day, so it is “right,” or redno e, to have a Father’s Day too. In Bulgaria, like in other countries, on this day children give presents to their fathers. It’s only “natural,” or estestveno e, for the family to celebrate together.
In some countries, this day is related to religious tradition or in Bulgarian traditsiya and is celebrated on St. Joseph’s Day, which according to Catholic tradition is on March 19. According to Bulgarian Orthodox Christianity, St. Joseph’s Day is on the day after Christmas and it is then that Bulgarian Father’s Day is celebrated. This is because “St. Joseph,” or Sveti Yosif, is Jesus’s earthly father.
The holiday was celebrated for the first time in Bulgaria in 1997. Unfortunately, this day is not yet celebrated very actively and many people don’t know that St. Joseph’s Day is “associated,” or se svarzva s, with the father’s role. Besides, on December 26, the Orthodox Church also celebrates the Christian holiday Synaxis of the Most Holy Mother of God and St. Joseph’s Day is not always accepted among the people.
“There are questions” or Sporno e over when Father’s Day is celebrated. “Sources,” or iztochnitsi, say that it’s celebrated, like in some other countries, on the third Sunday of June. In Bulgaria there also exists the holiday Rooster’s Day, defined as a men’s holiday.
Now it's time to answer our quiz question-
Do you know what Rooster’s Day in Bulgaria is and how it’s related to men?
Rooster’s Day is a holiday for the boosting of boys’ fertility. It is also considered as the men’s version of the women’s holiday Midwives’ Day. Rooster’s Day is a celebration of “male children,” or mazhki rozhbi, and the masculine beginning of the Bulgarian people.
