INTRODUCTION |
Becky: Hello and welcome back to BulgarianPod101.com. This is Beginner, season 1, lesson 7 - Planning Your Winter Vacation in Bulgaria. I'm Becky. |
Iva: Здрасти (zdrasti). This is Iva! |
Becky: In this lesson, you'll learn how to express a desire or intention to do something. |
Iva: The conversation takes place in a cafe. |
Becky: It’s between Milena and Veronika. They're having coffee after shopping. |
Iva: The speakers are friends, so they use informal language. |
CONVERSATION |
Let's listen to the conversation. |
Вероника: Какво ще правиш през зимната ваканция? (Kakvo shte pravish prez zimnata vakanciya?) |
Милена: Смятам да се запиша на курс по испански език. (Smyatam da se zapisha na kurs po ispanski ezik.) |
Вероника: Така ли? Аз пък искам да отида на екскурзия. (Taka li? Az pak iskam da otida na ekskurziya.) |
Милена: Къде искаш да ходиш? (Kade iskash da hodish?) |
Вероника: Не съм решила още... (Ne sam reshila oshte…) |
Милена: Искам и аз на екскурзия.... (Iskam i az na ekskurziya…) |
Let's hear the conversation one time slowly. |
Вероника: Какво ще правиш през зимната ваканция? |
Милена: Смятам да се запиша на курс по испански език. |
Вероника: Така ли? Аз пък искам да отида на екскурзия. |
Милена: Къде искаш да ходиш? |
Вероника: Не съм решила още... |
Милена: Искам и аз на екскурзия.... |
Now let's hear it with the English translation. |
Вероника: Какво ще правиш през зимната ваканция? |
Veronika: What are you going to do during the winter vacation? |
Милена: Смятам да се запиша на курс по испански език. |
Milena: I'm thinking of signing up for a Spanish language course. |
Вероника: Така ли? Аз пък искам да отида на екскурзия. |
Veronika: Really? And I want to go on a trip... |
Милена: Къде искаш да ходиш? |
Milena: Where do you want to go? |
Вероника: Не съм решила още... |
Veronika: I haven't decided yet... |
Милена: Искам и аз на екскурзия.... |
Milena: Me too, I want to go on a trip… |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Becky: So Milena said she wants to study Spanish. Is learning other languages popular in Bulgaria? |
Iva: Actually, Bulgarian people study many foreign languages, some of them in school, and some in courses or private lessons. |
Becky: What languages are popular? |
Iva: Firstly, of course, the official language in Bulgaria is Bulgarian. |
Becky: In the past, Russian was the most commonly known foreign language in Bulgaria, because it was the main foreign language in schools. |
Iva: Then, English became more common among Bulgarians, and the demand for English study has increased... |
Becky: So some people sign their kids up for pre-school English classes. |
Iva: Bulgarian people also study other European languages like German, |
Becky: French and Spanish, and so on. |
Iva: But there's also a Japanese language high-school... |
Becky: and even a high-school dedicated to the study of ancient languages like Latin and Ancient Greek! |
Iva: So Bulgarian people really do enjoy learning foreign languages. |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Becky: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. What’s first? |
Iva: “През” is a preposition that has various meanings in English. |
Becky: Some of the most common ones are “in”, “during”, “through”, “over”, and “via”. |
Iva: It's often used with seasons and parts of the year, like in this lesson's dialogue. |
Becky: OK. What’s next? |
Iva: “По” is also a preposition meaning “in”, “on”, or “by” among other things. |
Becky: You use it when you want to denote that something is “in” a certain subject or language. |
Iva: So let's say a “course in English” will be “курс по английски”. |
Becky: And, “textbook in Japanese” will be... |
Iva: “учебник по японски” in Bulgarian. |
Becky: OK, the next word is... |
Iva: “Така ли”? |
Becky: This is a Bulgarian interjection meaning “Really?”, “Indeed?” or simply “Oh yeah?” And it's used in the same way as in English. |
Iva: But note that it sounds a bit informal, so for more formal situations, you can use “Вярно ли?” |
Becky: Which means something like “Truly?” Okay, now onto the grammar. |
GRAMMAR POINT |
Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to express intentions and desires about the future. |
Iva: Yes, you'll learn how to talk about plans, intentions, or desires, especially in the future. |
Becky: And in order to do that, you have to use some typical verbs that express these meanings in Bulgarian. |
Iva: The first one is “смятам,” which can simply be translated as “to intend”. |
Becky: So how do we use it? |
Iva: When we want to form a phrase with intentional meaning, we should use the “да”-form in Bulgarian which means “to (something)”, which we already introduced. |
Becky: In the same way, in English we say “I intend to (do something)”. |
Iva: So in Bulgarian, this sounds like the following, “Смятам да уча китайски език.” |
Becky: In English this will be “I intend to study the Chinese language.” |
Iva: Here, the verb “to study”, or “уча” in Bulgarian, is in its “да”-form. |
Becky: Of course, intentions are more firm than desires, so when we wish to say we intend to do something, but it's still just a possibility, we use another verb. |
Iva: Let’s talk a little about using “искам” to express intention in Bulgarian. |
Becky: In that case, we already have an idea and intention, but still use a verb that directly translates as “to want”. |
Iva: Still, by the context, we can guess that the speaker will proceed to fulfill that desire in the future. |
Becky: Here again, we use the “да (da)”-form in Bulgarian, which is equivalent to the English “to (do something)”. |
Iva: For example, “Искам да се науча да готвя през свободното си време.” |
Becky: “I want to learn to cook in my free time.” |
Iva: And it seems that the speaker will really do that in the future. |
Becky: OK, can you repeat that for our listeners? |
Iva: Sure thing! “Искам да се науча да готвя през свободното си време.” (pause) |
Becky: OK, what if someone wants to learn Bulgarian in their free time? |
Iva: I suggest listening to our lessons... |
Becky: And reading the lesson notes! |
Iva: (laughs) Definitely! |
