| Jonathan: In this lesson you'll learn how to ask or say something in another language. |
| Iva: The conversation takes place at a restaurant where our characters are having a dinner. |
| Jonathan: As usual, the conversation is between Martin, Irina and Peter. |
| Iva: The speakers know each other so their speech is informal. |
| Jonathan: Let’s listen to the conversation. |

| Peter: (laughing) That's the Tabasco. |
| Martin: Tabasco? What's "tabasco" in Bulgarian? |
| Peter: Please wait a moment. (beeping) Oh, "tabasco" in Bulgarian is also called "tabasco". It means a spicy sauce. |
| Irina: (Cough cough cough.) Ohh, a spicy sauce... |

| Jonathan: Okay, so we saw the loan word Tabasco in this dialogue, but what are some others in Bulgarian, Iva? |
| Iva: Some of the most common ones are just used to describe something foreign like “баскетбол”, “волейбол”, “джаз”, “рок”, “футбол”, “компютър”. |
| Jonathan: I know we’ve talked about others like “мерси” from French and “чао” from Italian. |
| Iva: Yes, well remembered! Also, a lot come from ancient languages like Greek or Latin. |
| Jonathan: But all of them have this specific Bulgarian pronunciation that makes them a little bit different from the original. |
| Iva: I must say that even the many new words that come from computer-related jargon also have some Bulgarian influence. |
| Jonathan: Like what? |
| Iva: For example the word “to download” in Bulgarian sounds a little bit slang-y when younger people pronounce it with a suffix typical for Bulgarian verbs – “вам”. So the word changes like this: “download-вам”. |
| Jonathan: Hmm, interesting! |
| Iva: The same happens with “to attach”: “attach-вам”. Still some people regard this as a mistake and insist on keeping the original English word or creating a Bulgarian equivalent. |
| Jonathan: Our suggestion is to listen to the modern slang and just enjoy this freedom to create new words. But you should also use the phrases we introduced in this lesson so that when you are not sure, you can ask about the meaning of the word. |

| Jonathan: Let’s take a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. What’s first, Iva? |
| Iva: And the first one is “Лютив” - the Bulgarian word for the adjective “hot” or “spicy” in English. |
| Jonathan: Note that in Bulgarian, the definition of ‘hot’ might differ from that of other countries, and very hot food will be served. |
| Iva: But you can ask “Is this spicy?” by saying “Лютиво ли е?” |
| Jonathan: Could you repeat it again, that’s important! |
| Iva: “Лютиво ли е?” |
| Jonathan: And the next one is? |
| Iva: “Почакайте малко”. |
| Jonathan: “Wait for a second” |
| Iva: or “Wait a minute” or just “Wait” |
| Jonathan: It’s used in the same situations as in English, right? |
| Iva: Yes, the informal version is “Чакай малко”. |
| Jonathan: So we heard the formal one first. Could you repeat both, please? |
| Iva: “Почакайте малко”. And “Чакай малко”. |
| Jonathan: Formal and informal. So what is next? |
| Iva: “Също” is a Bulgarian adverb which can mean “also”, “too”, “as well” in English. |
| Jonathan: Once again… |
| Iva: “Също”. |
| Jonathan: Can you tell us more about its meaning? |
| Iva: It also means “the same thing” in neutral. |
| Jonathan: Give us an example, please. |
| Iva: For example you can say in a restaurant “Искам същото” which will mean “I want the same thing” to mean a meal. |
| Jonathan: OK. That’s a useful phrase. Now let’s move on to the grammar. |

| Jonathan: In this lesson, we are going to talk about how to say something in another language. |
| Iva: In Bulgarian, when we want to ask how to say a certain word or expression in Bulgarian, we will use the phrase from this lesson’s grammar point: “Как е ~ на български?” |
| Jonathan: Can you give us an example? |
| Iva: “Как е ‘vacation’ на български?” |
| Jonathan: Which means? |
| Iva: "What is ‘vacation’ in Bulgarian?” |
| Jonathan: How do we form this type of sentences? |
| Iva: First we put the adverb “how” which is “как” in Bulgarian; |
| Jonathan: OK, listeners, repeat after Iva. |
| Iva: “как” [pause]. Then we add the auxiliary verb in the third person singular form – “е” in Bulgarian; |
| Jonathan: Its meaning is “is”. |
| Iva: Exactly. Then put the word we want to ask about. |
| Jonathan: For example “train”. |
| Iva: Yes. “Train” is “влак” by the way. |
| Jonathan: And at the end? |
| Iva: At the end we add the phrase “на български” where the preposition “на” in this case means “in” and “български” is “Bulgarian.” |
| Jonathan: Can you repeat the phrase for our listeners? |
| Iva: Of course, “на български”. |
| Jonathan: Is there a difference between the formal and informal ways to ask this question? |
| Iva: A more formal way to ask this question is “Как ще кажете ~ на български?” or “Как ще кажете на български ~?” which means “How would you say [blank] in Bulgarian?” There are two ways to say it. In the second version, the item comes at the end of the sentence. |
| Jonathan: OK. Just for the practice, please repeat those. Listeners, listen and repat after Iva. |
| Iva: “Как ще кажете ~ на български?” and “Как ще кажете на български ~?” |
| Jonathan: Maybe you can put in a word for an example? |
| Iva: OK, “Как ще кажете ‘plum’ на български?” OR “Как ще кажете на български ‘plum’?” |
| Jonathan: What about asking for other languages? |
| Iva: That’s easy! We just put the name of the language instead of “на български”. |
| Jonathan: For example? |
| Iva: “Как е лютеница на английски?” |
| Jonathan: Ah, I remember “лютеница” from our previous lesson. This is a common type of relish. |
| Iva: Yes. Once again, “Как е лютеница на английски?” |
