| Iva: Again, this conversation takes place at Peter’s house. |
| Jonathan: So, the conversation is between Martin, Irina and Peter; Martin and Irina have been invited to Peter’s house. |

| Jonathan: Okay, Iva, in this dialogue we have some hints about Bulgarian culture. What can you tell us first? |
| Iva: Well, Bulgarians are very open when talk about possessions. They may ask you about your mobile phone, your house or your car, and even about how much they cost. |
| Jonathan: Hmm, okay.... |
| Iva: In the same way, they are open to discussing their own possessions. Feel free to ask about things and use the target phrase in this lesson so that you can learn more about your Bulgarian hosts! |
| Jonathan: But what about personal information, like... phone numbers? |
| Iva: When asking about cell numbers or e-mail addresses, Bulgarians are quite open-minded and will not mind giving their personal information if they consider someone a friend. |
| Jonathan: And they do that very fast because they are friendly people! |
| Iva: That’s right! Another cultural hint we had in the dialogue was that Bulgarians quite often have pets in their homes. |
| Jonathan: I see. But what if you are allergic, or don’t like pets? |
| Iva: Make sure to mention it before visiting, so that your hosts can keep their pet in a separate area during your visit. |
| Jonathan: But otherwise... |
| Iva: Well, if you like pets, in the typical Bulgarian house you might find many kinds of pets, mainly dogs and cats, but also others like hamsters, fish, and chameleons. |

| Jonathan: Let’s take a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. What are we starting with? |
| Iva: Let’s talk about “Заповядайте” first. |
| Jonathan: It’s a very useful phrase because it means “Welcome”; “Here you are” and “Help yourself” all at once. |
| Iva: Exactly. |
| Jonathan: If you look at the context, you can understand which of them is correct. |
| Iva: The informal version is “Заповядай”. |
| Jonathan: Will you say them again? Listeners, listen and repeat after Iva. Formal or the second person plural. |
| Iva: “Заповядайте”. [pause] |
| Jonathan: Informal or second person singular. |
| Iva: “Заповядай”. [pause] |
| Jonathan: Okay, what’s next? |
| Iva: “А”. |
| Jonathan: Is that all? |
| Iva: “А” is a conjunction used very often in Bulgarian. |
| Jonathan: In English it translates as “and”. |
| Iva: But in Bulgarian it can have the meaning of “but” sometimes. |
| Jonathan: How can we tell the difference? |
| Iva: There is always a comma before an “a” like this: “Студено е, (pause) а ми се излиза.” |
| Jonathan: Which means? |
| Iva: “It’s cold but I want to go out”. |
| Jonathan: Okay, got it. Now let’s go to the grammar. |

| Jonathan: The focus of this lesson is Possession – Saying that something belongs to someone. |
| Iva: In Bulgarian, “Това твоят/твоята/твоето [blank] ли е?” and “Това твоите [blank] ли са?” |
| Jonathan: OK, let’s look at them one by one. |
| Iva: “Това твоят [blank] ли е?” is when we ask “Is this your [blank]?” about an object in the masculine form. |
| Jonathan: And an example? |
| Iva: “Това твоят мобилен номер ли е?” |
| Jonathan: "Is this your cell phone number?" |
| What’s the next pattern? |
| Iva: “Това твоята [blank] ли е?” |
| Jonathan: So an example is... |
| Iva: “Това твоята стая ли е?” |
| Jonathan: “Is this your room?” Here, the word for room is feminine. And how about the neutral form? |
| Iva: We had it with the word dog, which is neutral. But I will give you another example. “Това на масата твое ли е?” |
| Jonathan: "Is this (thing) on the table yours?" |
| Iva: Yes, “thing” in Bulgarian is neutral and in this sentence it is omitted. |
| Jonathan: You just say “Is this on the table yours?” |
| Iva: “Това на масата твое ли е?” |
| Jonathan: Listeners, repeat after Iva the three forms of the pronoun “yours” in Bulgarian… |
| Iva: “твоят” [pause] “твоята” [pause] “твоето” [pause]. |
| Jonathan: And the plural is? |
| Iva: “Това твоите [blank] ли са?” |
| Jonathan: Here the auxiliary verb changes from “е” to “са”. |
| Iva: Yes, for example, “Това твоите ръкавици ли са?” |
| Jonathan: “Are these your gloves?” |
| Iva: That’s right. |
| Jonathan: And the whole construction is made of the pronoun “this” “това” plus one of these forms, plus the particle “ли” and the auxiliary verb at the end. |
| Iva: Exactly. |
| Jonathan: Let us practice some more. |
| Iva: “Това твоят син ли е?” |
| Jonathan: Which means? |
| Iva: "Is this your son?" |
| Jonathan: So we can use it with people too. |
| Iva: That’s right! |
| Jonathan: OK, I think these need a lot of practice. |
