INTRODUCTION
Yura: Basic Bootcamp, Lesson 5 - Counting from 100 to 1 million in Bulgarian. Hi everyone. Yura here, and welcome to Basic Boot Camp series, lesson 5. This is the fifth lesson in the five-part series that will help you ease your way into Bulgarian.
Iva: Здравейте. Аз съм Ива. I’m Iva.
Yura: In this lesson we’ll continue with the essentials of Bulgarian numbers. But in this lesson, we will venture into higher number territory - the number over 100 all the way to 1 million.
Iva: Sounds great.
Yura: You’ll be listening to two people at an auction.
Iva: That’s right. They will be bidding on an ancient Bulgarian coin.
Yura: Let’s listen to the conversation.

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yura: Let’s use this numbers a little. Let’s talk about prices in Bulgaria.
Iva: And let’s do them in the Bulgarian currency, Lev, which will be more appropriate for this lesson. Let’s take January 2012 currency rate where 10 Bulgarian Leva is equivalent to US$6.6. Prices in Bulgaria do vary a lot. It depends on where you are and what you eat.
Yura: What’s the price of an average meal in Sofia? What about a very nice meal in Sofia?
Iva: Well, Sofia is not the cheapest city in Bulgaria, especially in tourist spots around the country and on the black sea coast. But of course you can get food for about 3 to 15 Leva.
Yura: Which is roughly 2 - $10. What about a very nice meal?
Iva: Oh, the price might jump up to 30 or more Leva and it still wouldn’t be the most expensive one.
Yura: So that’s about $20. The food must be really good there.
Iva: The most expensive food is usually something specially prepared from the traditional Bulgarian cuisine.
Yura: I think our listeners would really like to try those.
Iva: You might not need to learn big numbers for food, but you do when you are shopping for say, jewellery. So, let’s try to count big numbers in Bulgarian, okay?

Lesson focus

Yura: There are two numbers we have to pay special attention to - one million and zero.
Iva: Well, when it comes to speaking about zero, I can’t think of a better example than saying it in your phone number, when we pronounce other digits separately.
Yura: And one million is a number you would most likely only use if you hit a jackpot.
Iva: It’s true, at least when it comes to money.
Yura: What about all other millions? Doesn’t the ending in милион change?
Iva: It does, but it will be easy to remember.
Yura: Listeners, repeat after Eva.
Iva: един милион
Yura: One million
Iva: два, три, четири милиона
Yura: 2, 3, 4 million.
Iva: пет, шест, седем, осем, девет милиона
Yura: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 million.
Iva: So, the changes милион becomes милиона when in plural.
Yura: Give us an example.
Iva: I’m looking for a meaningful one. How about един милион двеста тридесет и две хиляди и осемдесет и осем?
Yura: What does that mean?
Iva: That’s the population of Sofia.
Yura: Okay, so we use our usual formula here, 1,232,088, same as English. And now let’s have another example, the only one way we pronounce digits separately in Bulgarian - a phone number.
Iva: осем девет шест четири пет нула едно
Yura: They can also be pronounced in tens, but for better understanding, we use separate digits.
--
Yura: Okay. Now, let’s take a look at the structure of multiples of 100.
Iva: We’ve already learned how to say 100 сто. 200 and 300 are exceptions. They are двеста and триста.
Yura: But other than that, building multiples of 100 is very easy, just take the numbers 4 to 9 and add стотин at the end. Listen and repeat.
Iva: четиристотин, петстотин, шестотин, седемстотин, осемстотин, деветстотин
Yura: From the previous boot camp we also remember how to build three digit numbers. Now, we’ll use the same system to build numbers 200 through 999.
Iva: Okay. What would this be? четиристотин и едно
Yura: 401. It sounds familiar. Oh, there is horror TV show in America called “Room 401”. What’s next?
Iva: двеста тридесет и седем
Yura: Why do you come up with such creepy numbers? Room 237 was one in Stephen King’s The Shining. The one all the horrors started from.
Iva: Yeah, somehow I have a good memory for creepy things.
Yura: Anyway, it sounds exactly like in English. 237.
Iva: And next - деветстотин и четиринадесет
Yura: 914. I have a better association with this number. There was a cute old Porsche built about 40 years ago, called VW Porsche 914.
Iva: And about 5 years earlier, Porsche деветстотин и дванадесет was built.
Yura: Right, the Porsche 912. Okay, can you remember any other interesting things with numbers 1000 and above? But first, Eva, give us the word for 1000.
Iva: хиляда
Yura: So, 1000?
Iva: Just хиляда “thousand”. You don’t really have to say “one” here.
Yura: And 4000?
Iva: четири хиляди
Yura: So, we take number 4 and add 1000. But be careful the ending in хиляда has changed because of the plural number.
Iva: хиляди
Yura: So, here’s what we have. Listeners, repeat after Eva.
Iva: хиляда, две хиляди, три хиляди, четири хиляди, пет хиляди, шест хиляди, седем хиляди, осем хиляди, девет хиляди
Yura: When we say 21,000, 22,000, 23,000, we just say…
Iva: двадесет и една хиляди, двадесет и две хиляди, двадесет и три хиляди and so on.
Yura: So, you just take a multiple of 10 add a number from 1 to 9 and then add thousand. Easy as that. So, give us a complicated four digit number.
Iva: две хиляди и дванаседет
Yura: Nice. That’s the current year - 2012.
Iva: How about деветдесет хиляди двеста и десет
Yura: Another TV show number 9 0 2 1 0 but in Bulgarian we say this as 90,210. Okay. give us the last one Eva, the year you were born, for example.
Iva: Oh you didn’t have to say for example to know my age. Anyway, I have mentioned it before. So the year I was born in is хиляда деветстотин осемдесет и пета.
Yura: 1985. So the formula with numbers in the thousands is first you say how many thousand you have, then how many hundreds, then tens, then ones.
Iva: Yes, like in most languages.
Yura: Well, I am more than satisfied with my number quota for the day.
Iva: Same here.

Outro

Yura: So, that’s it for this lesson. Thanks for listening. Ciao!
Iva: Ciao!
